Description
This is a superb quality late Victorian coiled snake brooch.
It is modelled in 15K gold and set with 1.3 carats of old single and old mine cut diamonds. The Old European cut main diamond in the snake’s head – a new cut at the time – helps date this piece to 1890-1900.
Snakes were highly symbolic in Victorian jewellery design. Queen Victoria’s engagement ring which, given to her by Prince Albert in 1840, was designed like a snake: it wrapped around her finger twice, and its eyes were made of emeralds, which were her birthstone.
The snake symbolised eternal love, and emeralds represented rebirth.
